Monahans Sandhills State Park: A West Texas Treasure Continues to Draw Visitors from Across the State

Located just outside Monahans in the heart of West Texas, Monahans Sandhills State Park remains one of the region’s most unique and recognizable natural attractions. Known for its towering sand dunes, breathtaking sunsets, and family-friendly recreation, the park continues to welcome thousands of visitors each year while showcasing the beauty and history of the Permian Basin.
Established in 1957, the park protects thousands of acres of rolling sand dunes that stretch across Ward and Winkler Counties and are part of a much larger dune system extending into New Mexico. Some dunes rise as high as 70 feet, creating a landscape unlike anywhere else in Texas.
Visitors from across Texas and beyond travel to Monahans to experience activities such as sand surfing, sand sledding, hiking, camping, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, and photography. The park’s ever-changing dunes, shaped by West Texas winds, offer a different experience with every visit.

In addition to recreation, the park also serves as an important educational and geological landmark. Experts believe the dunes began forming thousands of years ago from sand deposits carried by the Pecos River and shaped by strong winds during ancient climate changes. The area also holds deep historical significance, as Native Americans once relied on the dunes and underground water sources for survival.
The Dunagan Visitor Center inside the park gives guests the opportunity to learn more about the area’s wildlife, history, and ecosystem. Despite its desert appearance, the park supports a surprising variety of plants and animals that have adapted to life in the sandhills.
Monahans Sandhills State Park has become not only a destination for outdoor adventure, but also a source of pride for the local community. Families, tourists, school groups, and photographers continue to make memories among the dunes year after year, helping support tourism and highlight one of West Texas’ most remarkable natural wonders.
Whether visitors are sliding down the dunes, camping under the stars, or simply enjoying the peaceful scenery, Monahans Sandhills State Park offers a true Texas experience that continues to leave a lasting impression on all who visit.
